Crowscare

Jay Holloway's Crowscare is now on our YouTube channel!

Pretty coed May (Rachel DeJulio) thinks she has it made when she gets a job housesitting an estranged couple's cozy farmhouse. Her feelings quickly change when she sees the bizarre scarecrow crucified in the front yard, and she invites her friend Christie (Samm Simmons) to keep her company for the night. However, before Christie can arrive the scarecrow mysteriously vanishes, and May's job suddenly becomes a lot harder than she anticipated.

May (Rachel DeJulio) gets her first look at the scarecrow.
Inspired by slasher films of the early 1980s, Crowscare features entirely practical special effects designed by MonsterBuster make-up artist Ricky Hess, and chief among them is the unique and creepy living scarecrow that menaces the farmhouse. "When designing the look of the scarecrow I thought it would be cool if he appeared half-rag doll and half-tree," director and co-writer Holloway notes. "I drew up a few sketches and from there Ricky used old clothes, a coffee-stained cloth and work boots to create the creature effect."

Christie (Samm Simmons) foolishly agrees to visit to her friend.
True to its inspirations, Crowscare also contains copious amounts of blood, particularly in one scene where a deranged intruder (Andy Fleming) utilizes a drill Slumber Party Massacre-style. "I wanted to go all out visually with the blood and gore, and to make this effect work the crew made gallons of fake blood, poured it into a jug and hooked it up to a drill pump," Holloway adds. "This was then used to spray the actor with lots of fake blood. When making a horror movie such as Crowscare on a small budget I think it forced the crew and myself to come up with creative visuals."

Crowscare was shot entirely on a Canon 60D. Jay Holloway's previous movie Werebum will harass YouTube for change later this month, and until then be sure to check out First Date, Mario and Luigi and Jake and Julie Vs. The Boogeyman!
